Catch Dubai has a salsa class every Monday.
Starting from 8pm, there’s a Salsa class and fresh Havana beats all the way from Cuba, courtesy the Cubashe band at this chic restaurant.
We learnt the Bachata for 20 minutes and kept changing the partners. The instructor Ric Banks took us through some of the moves.
The Nutcracker on Ice at Dubai Opera is breathtakingly beautiful.
The Imperial Ice Stars know their job and their skating was near perfection.
The music, the sets and the costumes were to the tee.
There were some coordination issues and sometimes the sound of skates on ice was heard over and above the music, but while enacting a musical, these things become part of the act.
The protagonist Clara, was stunning on ice with some beautiful flips and jumps. While the romantic duets between Clara and Nutcracker were mesmerising.
There were magic tricks on stage. Uncle Drosselmeyer, Clara’s mystical uncle and the grandma were great with some lovely tricks and dance moves up their sleeve.
A great show for kids and adults alike.
Yanni performed in Abu Dhabi over two days, kickstarting the concert season.
From old hits to some new songs, the musician had the audience enthralled.
The orchestra was great with some beautiful solos and vocals.
The drummer in particular played his solo with great style.
The violin players rendered some soulful music, while the vocalists enhanced the music.
Our favourite song was the ‘Nightingale’, which had beutiful music and vocals.
Yanni gave some deep life messages and played songs dedicated to his mum and dad.
A capella group Penn Masala’s Dubai debut saw a number of mash-ups.
The South Asian team started the band in a dorm room in Pennsylvania.
Penn Masala also did cameo in the Pitch Perfect sequel, where we see international a capella groups battle it out in a prestigious sing-off.
They brought their signature sound of English and Hindi mash-ups to the UAE audience.
Students originally formed the a cappella quartet 20 years ago at the University of Pennsylvania. It has since grown in numbers and talent. The key to their longevity, they say, is their alumni base.
Penn Masala has also performed at the White House, in front of President Obama.
Mad About Dance (MAD) has dance as it’s core but has expanded in other areas as well.
Personal fitness training sessions to personal dance classes and a few more innovative ideas in the pipeline, MAD has completed a year in Dubai.
MAD owns two properties – Summer Star and the Annual Show.
More ideas and innovative classes are in the pipeline.
Legendry Kathak dancer Aditi Mangaldas was recently in UAE to perform her Classical and contemporary kathak pieces.
Titled ‘Utsav’ her classical piece showcased the festivities of India and the performance had a lot of dancing based on claps. Her solo piece of her ghungroos making a sound was exceptional. It was almost as if one is looking for the sound in a jungle. The command over her feet and the sound that comes from them is par excellence.
The contemporary piece ‘Timeless’ was indeed a beauty. Starting with the beats of the dholak or drums to almost dancing in silence. She and her troupe didn’t fumble even in silence.
A treat to watch her dancing and the choreography she brings to the stage is a sight for sore eyes.
The stage design, lights go very well with the choreography and takes a Kathak performance to a different level.
A must-watch performance whenever you get the chance.
BLAZE The Show was in Dubai recently where a BLAZE Masterclass was hosted by none other than the extraordinarily talented BLAZE team.
With the BLAZE dancers specialising in the fields of breaking, tapping, popping, locking and hip hop, thirty participants will get the chance to learn a multitude of different dance styles from the very best in the world.
The Blaze team showed us what it takes to be a dancer and some cool moves.
